Kater Munkustrap, Oberhaupt und Beschützer der Katzen, übernimmt die Rolle des Erzählers: Eine große Katzenschar kommt auf einer Londoner Müllkippe zusammen, um den Jellicle Ball zu feiern, an dessen Ende eine Katze erwählt wird, wiedergeboren zu werden und ein neues Leben zu bekommen. Eine der jüngsten Katzen, Victoria, eröffnet den Ball. Nachdem sich alle Katzen mit einem eigenen Lied präsentiert haben, wird der Älteste der Katzen, Old Deuteronomy, der die Wahl treffen muss, von dem Katzenschurken Macavity entführt. Mit der Hilfe des jugendlichen Zauberkaters Mr. Mistoffelees gelingt es jedoch, Old Deuteronomy wieder herbei zu zaubern. Victoria ist die erste Katze, welche die von der Gesellschaft ausgestoßene alte Katze Grizabella, die schon bessere Zeiten gesehen hat, wieder annimmt. Überraschend entscheidet sich daraufhin Old Deuteronomy für Grizabella. Sie wird wieder aufgenommen, darf zum Heavyside Layer aufsteigen und ein neues Leben beginnen.
