Aus einem Impuls heraus schickt Therese Carol eine Karte zu Weihnachten, auf die sie wider Erwarten eine Antwort erhält. Verbunden durch das Gefühl der Einsamkeit, beginnen die beiden Frauen, immer mehr Zeit miteinander zu verbringen. Dabei entwickelt Therese starke Gefühle für Carol – sehr zum Missfallen von Carols Mann Harge. Dieser droht, seiner Frau das Sorgerecht für die gemeinsame Tochter zu entziehen. Alles, was er dazu braucht, sind handfeste Beweise für die geheime Liebschaft der Frauen. Harge zieht alle Register und engagiert einen Privatdetektiv, den er auf Therese und Carol ansetzt.
