Nach einem Autounfall muss sich William Colby im Motel Noteinquartieren und findet schnell Draht zum minderjährigen Eigenbrötler. Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich eine sonderbare Freundschaft, die dem Vater zum Dorn im Auge wird. Als der im Zimmer seines Sohnes Ersparnisse vorfindet und erkennt, dass der Junge schon seit längerer Zeit plant, seinen Vormund zu verlassen, nehmen die Dinge eine unerwartete Wendung.
