Im Texas des Jahres 1869 ist das Farmleben ein hartes Geschäft, so daß das Oberhaupt der Familie Coates für drei Monate auf einen Viehtreck gehen muß, um genügend Geld für die Familie zu erarbeiten. Dadurch wird der erst 15jährige Travis plötzlich zum Familienoberhaupt. Während er sich bemüht, die Farm am Laufen zu halten, freundet sich sein kleinerer Bruder Arliss mit einem streunenden großen Hund an, der auf die Farm gewandert kommt und für Durcheinander sorgt. Travis behält den Hund und man ihn Jello, was sich als Vorteil herausstellt, denn als Wachhund eignet er sich hervorragend. Die Familienbindung wird so stark, daß sogar der Besitzer Jellos, der ihn schließlich aufstöbert, den Hund bei den Coates läßt. Eine Horde marodierender Wildscheine wird schließlich zur großen Bewährungsprobe für die Jungen und den Hund und führt zu einigen schwerwiegenden Entscheidungen.
